NEW MUSICAL ZORRO TO HIT EUROPEAN STAGES
GIPSY KINGS MUSICAL TO BE PRESENTED IN FRANCE, GERMANY AND THE NETHERLANDS
Amsterdam, 4 March 2009.... Stage Entertainment has teamed up with the creators of the musical Zorro for the launch of a series of three to five new productions in Europe. The original English production received five Laurence Olivier nominations including ‘Best Musical’ and ‘Best Choreography’. The French language production is scheduled to open in the fall of 2009 at the legendary Theatre Les Folies Bergère in Paris. Auditions will take place in Paris between March and April.
Zorro is based on the 2005 novel by Isabel Allende. The original stage version of the story, presenting the adventures of the masked avenger was directed by Christopher Renshaw. Internationally renowned Spanish choreographer Rafael Amargo created the choreography; Tom Piper of the Royal Shakespeare Company designed set and costumes.
This new theatrical version is enhanced by the music of the Gipsy Kings including hits like ‘Bamboleo’ and ‘Djobi Djoba’ as well as by new compositions specially created for the show. The music will be played on European stages by a live orchestra.
The legend of Zorro is set in 19th century California. At the age of 16, Zorro (Diego de la Vega) is sent by his father to Barcelona, who hopes the experience will teach him discipline and nobility. This does not go according to plan and he falls in with a band of gipsy entertainers. His childhood friend Luisa comes to fetch him back to California, where his half brother is subjecting the people to a repressive colonial rule. Diego has to resort to unique and unexpected measures to free the people and regain his father's respect.
